Governors Island is the perfect escape from the city: 172 acres of car-free bike paths, playgrounds, gardens and incredible views all a five-minute ferry ride from lower Manhattan daily or Brooklyn (weekends only).

Toddler Pulling a WagonThe park is open to the public May 1 – October 1.  Bring a picnic or take advantage of the wide array of food vendors. Overview of Governors Island-2Bikes are available for rent on the island or cyclists can bring their own for free on the ferry. Earth Matter  offers tours of the compost learning center on weekends beginning in late May.  GrowNYC’s teaching garden hosts field trips, workshops and public events centered on urban farming.

    If you are in NY on June 10 or 11, you would enjoy taking pictures during this jazz age lawn party. It is big, people are going in number , all dress up,they take the ferry to the Island, they have a good time, swing dance on the lawn, you feel going back and living for a few hours at the time of the Great Gastby… `
